Join the running boom and embrace a healthier lifestyle with our guide on how to get started with fitness and stay motivated.

A few articles have been published that talk about a running boom globally (RunRepeat Running Boom, InsideHook, Jeff Galloway Training). Although most of the new runners started or made a comeback during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, this running boom is still in effect three years later. In my opinion, we are currently experiencing a boom in a more active lifestyle, not just in running, where any kind of movement or added mobility into our busy lives is being sought.

In some online groups, old-time runners mentioned that running and working out are becoming more visible and popular than they remember. Race registrations get sold out faster these days. Why is this happening? Some may attribute this to Instagram’s “runfluencers” and “fitspirations,” with an increased visibility and popularity of digital content about the importance of healthy lifestyle choices. I have at least four friends who have said the “algorithm” got them. Their social media feed is filled with running clubs, reels, running shoes, and clothes. So why not join the bandwagon?

Give in to the algorithm with me. Are you curious about running? Have you always wanted to try it but are not sure where or how to start? Have you been too shy or afraid to give it a go? Then this article is for you. I’m here to give you the tools to start living a healthy, active life.

1. Join Virtual Activities

If you are the type of person to shy away from group activities, you can start with virtual activities. Some of my friends used the Nike Training and/or Running Club to get started. So far, it has challenged them in a good way, and they continue to use it two years later. Other apps you can get started with are Caliber, Strava, and, of course, the Pinoy Fitness Mobile App (available on Google Play and the Apple Store). Joining the virtual races in the Pinoy Fitness app has allowed several people to stay committed and motivated in their running journey. Most of the virtual races are FREE!

Using fitness apps provides convenience and personalization. They are easily accessible and user-friendly. More importantly, these apps allow us to track our progress and monitor our goals. Fitness apps also allow us to connect with friends, family, or other users with similar fitness goals. This gives us accountability partners, a sense of community, and more motivation. Plus, it’s fun to receive virtual trophies and medals for every achievement unlocked! Whether it’s running, walking, or just moving, using virtual apps will definitely get you started.

2. Join Fitness or Running Clubs

Eventually, virtual apps will make you aspire for more. Or maybe you are the type of person who enjoys company and meeting new people. Going over to Facebook or Instagram, you will be able to find groups that meet up weekly to work out together for free. Fees can be incurred if the activity involves equipment or a certain facility. But recently, more and more running clubs (UPDreamers, Tara G!, EZRC, to name a few) are being formed to invite beginners and curious souls, and to carry on with the running boom that happened during COVID-19. Check out this Pinoy Fitness List of Running Clubs in the Philippines; it’s labeled per area.

Besides being a great way to meet like-minded people, fitness/running clubs will help you work towards your goals. It is a fun way to make friends, it gives you access to equipment and guidance, builds relationships, and provides accountability.

3. Sign Up for a Race or Event

I got my neighbors to start moving by asking them to join the first-ever Women’s Run PH last October. Truthfully, it started with them sending me a DM saying, “how?”. They have been inspired by the races I joined and reported about and wanted to get their journey started. I simply said sign up for a 5K race and everything will follow. Signing up for a race or event can be daunting at first, but it is the perfect way to set up a clear goal for yourself. It’s time-bound (with cut-off times and an exact date when it will happen), it’s specific (5K distance, for example), and it’s measurable (they provide you with your official time and ranking). The moment you register, you’re committed.

Some beginner races come with structured training plans, which can be helpful for people who thrive on goals and deadlines. When you commit financially and mentally, this means you already have the motivation to train. There are days when we want to skip a workout (stressed from work, it’s too hot or rainy), but we can’t because we need to follow the training plan and make it through our race! To explore upcoming races, check out this Pinoy Fitness Calendar of Events.

Everything is a tool you can use to get started, and we all have our own reasons for starting. But if there’s anything I’ve learned in this fitness journey, it’s that community and camaraderie are what made me stay. Well-organized races allow us to be part of a larger community: a group of people who are willing to wake up early or sleep late just to keep moving. Knowing that there are other people out there who share the same passion makes running more gratifying and fulfilling.

Several articles on the internet could help you start your fitness journey, but I am writing this for you, yes you! Because of my personal experience with a life of movement. The kind of empowerment and freedom exercise has given me is something I wish for a lot more people. Running has opened my mind about what I can do. Achieving a fitness goal and crossing the finish line in one piece have boosted my confidence and provided a sense of accomplishment that is incomparable.

An active life has given me the mental fortitude, patience, and courage to face almost any curveball life can throw at me. Adidas has it right with “impossible is nothing.” And Nike’s tagline “Just do it” makes a lot of sense once you start your fitness journey. I imagine not everyone can just do it, so I hope this short article inspires you to start moving.
