Top 8 Running Etiquette Pinoy Runners should know

A few days ago we asked everyone what do you think are the top running etiquette that each runner should know and abide when running a race event. We got some amazing responses and decided to share them here!

1. Don’t suddenly stop and take a “Selfie”.
We know it’s a fun run and you want to make it extra memorable by taking a few snaps, but if you must take a “selfie” just be mindful of the runners behind you and don’t suddenly stop or at least move to the side of the road before you take your pictures.

2. Practice discipline, especially in taking care of your trash.
We know it’s a race and you want to drink as fast as you can and ditch that cup of water. That’s OK, organizers normally clean them up after the race, but as much as possible throw empty cups in the garbage bins provided or at least near the hydration stations, not somewhere in-between hydration station 1 and 2.

3. Observe proper Hygiene
In short, Don’t Spit.

4. Warn before passing someone
When passing someone, give them a warning, say “Passing Through” or something similar, say “Thanks” afterwards.

5. Give respect to ALL runners.
Fast or Slow. Remember, every one of us started from 0. Don’t pull anyone down, give an encouraging word instead “Kaya mo yan” or “Keep going” should work pretty well.

6. It’s human to Walk.
Everyone gets tired, but if you must walk or stop to take some time to rest, don’t do it suddenly, slowly pace down and if possible move to the side of the race course.

7. Wave and Give a Cheer
Though some runners prefer to zone out during a run to focus on themselves, others feel energized when seeing a wave or hearing a cheer, try it and let’s all promote a sense of camaraderie.

8. Don’t forget to Have Fun!
– After all we all do this for the love of running and fitness. PR or not don’t forget to smile and enjoy every race.

  1. Not really a selfie pero bastos yung mga groups of 3-5 na hihinto sa gitna ng road para magpapicture sa volunteer photographers, minsan sa may starting area pa. Yung daan nahaharangan

  2. dagdag:

May laman pa yung cup, hinagis bigla. Sa paanan ko pa. Basa tuloy yung paa ko. Sasapukin ko sana kaso naharangan ako nung isang babae. :)

  4. In relation to number 4, always keep right na lang para madali makadaan ‘yung gustong magmabilis.

  5. Use hand signal Kung pupunta s kanan o kaliwa when overtaking at wg kalimutan lumingon s gilid bgo gawin pra maiwasan Ang karambola..tnx!

I would suggest to the organizers to include the race etiquette in the kit.

  7. Slower runners should kindly take the right side of the road, in consideration for runners who are trying to reach for their personal records. Before the gunstart, fellow slower runners should avoid being obstacles to the much faster elite runners. They are not just running–they are also racing, so make way for them if you cannot outpace them. It’s as simple as that. Oh, and one more thing. right after the gun start is definitely NOT the most appropriate time to take a “selfie”. If you do this and you get bumped or shouted at, it probably isn’t the other runner’s fault.

The general rule is just to be mindful of other runners.

    Happy running! :)

  8. know your place sa assembly area, competitive runners sa harap, average sa gitna, recreational runners sa likod. yung iba kasi pumunta sa harap para sa photo-op lang

  9. Don’t spit…swallow! :))

Honestly, I do try to spit but only in a discreet manner as long as there is nobody right in front of me. Spitting on your left or right side is definitely a big no-no.

  10. i find it despicable, disgusting when some runners throw the cups they used to drink from the water station, guys please don’t do this, sana picturan ng running photographers ung mga ganitong runners while throwing cups ehehehe, exciting!

  11. sa true lang wlang discipline ang iba sana pgktpoas pag-inum ilagay ng maayos sa tarsh can or garbage bim at wag ittpon bigla sa likuran ang mga cups baka may kasunod ka or may mtpunan ka be careful and also respect others kung slow runners ka sa right die at pag mbilis namna sa gitna or center lane ok just what i did always.thx

  12. worst yung itapon yung banana peel sa gitna ( believe me i picked up 2) madilim dilim pa at yung ice cube hindi kaya maisip nung nagtapon how grave if some runner step on it?

    • Running Etiquette# 9:
If you don’t have a body like Randy Orton or John Cena, then its disgusting if you’re running without your singlets on. Seeing you without a shirt on, with your chest hairs flowing with sweat like Pagsanjan falls, is not pleasant to the eyes of the Running Photographers and fellow runners.

  13. Mgprovide ng portable.toilet along d route and yes use water bottle. Print the rules and include.in d kit. devide the runners in 2.categories: runners in the front and jogģers at d back.

  14. To the ladies, magsuot ng sexy every race para ma motivate ang mga guys na tumakbo ng mabilis magpayabang and para ganahan din yung iba na mag join sa mga race events dahil magaganda at sexy ang sumasali. To all guys, i appreciate naman natin ang effort ng girls by admirimg them para ganahan silang magpasexy lalo, hehehe.

  16. true!! When someone pushed me last time at the hydration area just to get her water. And when people throw bananas along the way.tsktsk.please be responsible.

  17. it’s good that you’re sharing this :) btw, how’s the water stations? are we allowed to refill our hydration bottles or they’ll just hand out plastic cups with water in it? sorry, it’s my first time to join a full marathon in manila.

  18. Yung mga mistress may etiqutte..so please fellow runners, follow these simple rules. Thanks! See u guys this sunday.. we can do this! ☺💪

  19. Sad that i sprained my ankle in a basketball game weeks ago.. i was prohibited by my doctor for any running until next week.. sayang ang registration.. U0001f614U0001f614U0001f614

  20. Its disgusting to wear strong cologne/perfume during a race. The smell of cologne/perfume mixed with sweat is GROSS.

    Nakaka hilo yun amoy yun…nakakasuka
